How much does it cost to fix an air conditioner?

heating and cooling edmonton

The only fix for this is a costly replacement of the equipment, which includes various small parts, new Freon, and labor. Cost: $500 to $2,100. It might be wise to replace your air conditioner if it's more than eight years old, or if the estimated cost of repair is more than 50% of the cost of a new unit.

Some tips below.

• Keeping the cool air inside is just as important as keeping the warm air outside. Caulking, weather stripping, and adding additional attic insulation will help keep cool air inside during the summer.

• Make sure the air is flowing properly through the vents. Inspect the ductwork for holes or separated joints, and hire a professional to repair them.

• Add insulation around air-conditioning ducts, when they are located in unconditioned spaces, such as attics, crawl spaces and garages; do the same for whole house fans where they open to the exterior or attic.

• Homeowners should check the SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) rating of their air-conditioning unit. The higher the SEER rating, the more energy efficient the unit is and the lower your utility bills will be. Upgrading to a higher SEER rating can save homeowners hundreds of dollars a year on their energy bills.

If the air-conditioning unit needs to be replaced, homeowners should be aware of the U.S. Department of Energy legislation that requires all new, central air-conditioning units manufactured after January 23, 2006, to have a SEER of at least 13.

Consumers may want to consider an energy-efficient model, such as the Coleman Echelon™ 15+ SEER air conditioner. New models are Energy Star® qualified, use environmentally friendly refrigerant and have high-efficiency scroll compressors that enhance reliability and contribute to the extremely quiet operation of the units.

Top 5 Plants for a cleaner home in Edmonton!

When we think of air pollution, our minds naturally gravitate toward crowded freeways and monstrous production factories.  We rarely visualize our cozy indoor abode as a hotbed for harmful chemicals. The unfortunate truth is that the limited air flow inside our homes means that we’re unintentionally building up air pollution from things like our furniture and cleaning products, and even from the synthetic materials that our houses and condos are made of!
The good news is that we have the natural means of eliminating most of these pollutants. All we need is a bit of plant know-how! With the right plants and a bit of a green thumb, anyone can clean their home of harmful chemicals and start living a healthier life. Here is a breakdown of five of the best air purifying plants. Take a look below!
First up, I hope there are no arachnophobes out there, because spider plants are your new best friend. They are easy to care for! A fantastic addition to any home that has little ones or pets running around. They are known to grow fast, look great in hanging baskets and get rid of any lingering formaldehyde or xylene in your air.

The snake plant, also known as Mother in Law’s Tongue, is a hardy indoor plant. It that requires little in terms of maintenance but filters the air in your home in a big way. Depending on the variety that you decide to go with, you can have a table-top or a floor version, which can grow up to eight feet tall!

If you’re looking for a plant that does double duty, Aloe Vera is hands-down your new go-to. On top of being a rockstar formaldehyde killer, its leaves contain some seriously potent medicinal properties. Chock full of vitamins, enzymes and amino acids, the juice from its leaves is a leading ingredient in most sunburn relievers and can also be consumed as a health supplement. Scrapes or cuts? Aloe Vera is great for that, with its wound-healing, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties!
clear-skies-heating-air-conditioning-edmonton-hvac-experts
Do you have a shady spot in your home that could use a bit of floral flare? Peace Lilies are a beautiful addition to any darker corner of your home, since they love moist soil and indirect light. You can enjoy its lush chemical-annihilating leaves year-round and its beautiful white buds during the summer months. Just be sure to keep it out of reach of both cats and dogs, as it is toxic to them.
clear-skies-heating-air-conditioning-edmonton-hvac-experts
Finally, and rated the best toxin neutralizer of all by NASA! The Chrysanthemum neutralizes all kinds of dangers, like benzene, formaldehyde, xylene and even ammonia! She’s a double-edged sword though. The Chrysanthemum only blooms for about 6 weeks of the year, and without those beautiful flowers she doesn’t absorb any toxins. Because of this you’re going to want to pick a couple more plants from this list – or all of them! – to supplement her toxin neutralizing abilities in her downtime.

It’s no secret that movies sell magic. Or magic sells movies? It’s safe to say that without a slight bit of embellishment on behalf of Hollywood, the grain of truth surrounding everyday objects embedded within the folds of movie mystery wouldn’t be nearly as captivating. Take HVAC, for instance. Ordinary ducting that we take for granted receives a new level of intrigue in these action-packed movies.
One of the most iconic HVAC duct scenes in cinematic history takes place when an intrepid John McClane, played by Bruce Willis, hops into a rooftop air-handling unit in Die Hard (1988). By some miracle, the ducting happily supports his couple hundred pounds of body weight without so much as bowing.  Two years later McClane returns to his ventilation antics in the next installment of the Die Hard saga. He once again defeats the laws of gravity by monkeying around inside some ducting before springing through a vent cover apparently held in place by hopes and dreams.
clear-skies-heating-and-air-conditioning-edmonton-best-in-edmonton
In Mission Impossible (1996), Tom Cruise undertakes a similar tactic as Ethan Hunt in his infamous entry into Langley’s white control room. The front door is clearly not an option given the facility’s tight security, so Hunt is left relying on an impressively strong air duct to make his subtle entry.
clear-skies-heating-and-air-conditioning-best-in-edmonton
Have you ever experienced the frustration of wandering, hopelessly lost, only to realize that you’ve been going in circles? Try adding to that being on a foreign planet and stuck in a ventilation shaft. The Fifth Element features an alien transformed into a human female. Bewildered, confused and scared, she leaps head first into an air duct. At the climax of the film, this earthly newcomer attempts an escape through an air vent only to realize that it is circular and that she has trapped herself. HVAC = 1, Alien = 0. Bonus points because this film also features Bruce Willis.
clear-skies-heating-and-air-conditioning-best-in-edmonton
Speaking of extraterrestrials, Alien offers a unique approach to the antagonist – prey dichotomy. Whereas in most movies, and all that we have seen on this list, the good guy typically uses the ventilation system to escape the harrowing grasp of its enemy, the makers of Alien chose to have their predator use it to stalk its prey. Despite stretching the bonds of reality slightly by having a huge, acid-spitting alien navigate a ventilation system seemingly weightlessly, framing the film this way definitely adds a level of intrigue and suspense.
clear-skies-heating-and-air-conditioning-best-in-edmonton
Finally, in the least believable instance of use of HVAC in a movie yet, we are met with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Reach deep into the souvenirs of your childhood. Do you remember the scene where Charlie and Grandpa Joe sneak a sip of a strange soda and are then drawn into a ventilation shaft full of bubbles? As our heroines are pulled helplessly toward a menacing propeller fan, the realization dawns on them that the only solution is to start burping. The more that the couple belches, the further they are let down into safety.
clear-skies-heating-and-air-conditioning-best-in-edmonton
Whether Hollywood is creating something that is a complete stretch of the imagination or whether they are just toeing the line of reality, it makes for great entertainment. It is almost a relief to know that whatever the predicament, there will always be a slightly oversized, abnormally strong vent shaft available just when our hero needs one.

AC is good for your home!

No doubt summers in Edmonton can reach super-hot temperatures that can make your home uncomfortable! And the question always lies is it worth investing in an AC for only 3-4 months of the year? An Air Conditioner has a longevity and positive effects which will not only provide comfort but a healthier mind and you! The professionals at Legacy Heating and Cooling are here to help!
Take a read below for a few additional AC benefits:

1) Efficiency and Comfort increases
Research shows that in comfortable conditions the efficiency of a person increases. When temperatures rise, not all the heat from the body is released. This leads to one feeling uncomfortable, causing irritation of mind and body as well as a possible lack of concentration. Heat through the night can lead to restless sleep and tossing and turning, resulting in low productivity. With the correct temperatures brought by the use of an AC, a person feels more comfortable, and as a result more efficient throughout the day!
2) Better health and indoor air quality (IAQ)
On average the indoor air quality is 2-10 times worse than the outdoor quality. Air conditioners help circulate filtered air inside any space such as a room or office and keep a home cool throughout. The clean filtered air is free from dust and dirt particles, smoke, bacteria etc. which leads to better health! They also help with respiratory conditions such as asthma by maintaining a consistent circulation that removes contaminants from the air!
3) Noise reduction
A positive result to the windows of rooms and offices to remain closed in an air conditioned home is it reduces the amount of sound entering the room. A quiet environment leads to that provides a soothing sleep at night and also maintains peace inside businesses!
4) Fresh air
Fresh air is transferred and taken in by the blower of the air conditioner and distributed within the building. This leads to creating a comfortable home/work environment with cool fresh air!

Cool Summer Tips!

Summer in Edmonton can be unpredictable at times but one thing is for sure it’s a HOT one. As temperatures rise we all know that using AC, having a popsicle or getting drenched in water are ways to stay cool. But here are 11 ways to keep your cool in our hot temperature

11 Summertime Coolness Tips!
  1. Eat small meals more often throughout the day. Your body spends less time creates breaking down food. Avoid foods that are high in protein, which increase metabolic heat.
  2. Every 2 hours run your wrists under a cold water for 5 seconds as a main vein passes through this area, it helps cool the blood.
  3. Eat spicy food. I know the question really? In taking curries and chillies will stimulate heat receptors in the mouth, enhance circulation and cause sweating, which cools the body down.
  4. Take a bath or shower just below body temperature before bedtime. Although a cold shower might sound more tempting, your body generates heat afterwards to compensate for the heat loss.
  5. It’s true basements are the coolest area in the house. So take advantage of going downstairs as it runs 10-15 degrees than the upstairs of the house, and keep cool!
  6. Wear lightweight, light-coloured cotton clothes. Heat is trapped by synthetic fibres, but cotton absorbs perspiration and its evaporation causes you to feel cooler. The light colours reflect the sun's radiation.
  7. Some of us tend to forget to do this but keeping the curtains drawn when you are out can prevent the house overheating and feeling like a sauna.
  8. On a hot day it’s natural to crave a nice cold beer or a chilled spritzer but as many of you know alcohol dehydrates the body. Although it’s not as satisfying as those drinks, a great substitution is mineral water or low-sugar fizzy drinks. Drinks with caffeine such as coffee and colas will crease the metabolic heat in the body.
  9. Purchase a Chillow. It's a thin, soft, thermo-regulating leather device that you place inside your pillow case or lay on top of your pillow to keep your head cool. In studies, Chillow users got to sleep an average of 68 per cent faster. You can pick one up at Walmart or Bed, Bath and Beyond.
  10. Sleeping under a sheet is one of the best things to do. Even better, put your sheets in a plastic bag and stick them in the fridge a couple of hours before going to bed. As we fall asleep our body temperature lowers, which is why it's difficult to sleep in hot weather. Cold sheets straight from the fridge should help you sleep better.
  11. Air conditioning units is a great way to stay cool all summer long and at Legacy Heating and Cooling we can help with your needs.
