Many people ask us, "Can I troubleshoot before calling you for a service visit?" The answer is YES! There is no need to be afraid of your furnace or AC system. However, you need to be smart and safe with troubleshooting.
Please follow these simple procedures if you want to try fixing your furnace or AC before calling a Legacy HVAC professional.
- Check disconnect switches and breaker switches. If you have a split air conditioning system or furnace, make sure to check both indoor and outdoor switches. Make sure that circuit breakers are on and that fuses have not blown. If your furnace is more than 5 feet away from your electrical panel, check if you have a switch by your furnace and make sure it is on.
- Check for sufficient airflow. Make sure air filters are clean and that supply-air and return-air grilles are open and unobstructed.
- Check the settings on your thermostat. If you want cooling, make sure the temperature control selector is set below room temperature and the system switch is on the "cool" or "auto" position. If you want heat, make sure the temperature control selector is set above room temperature and the system switch is on "heat" or "auto". The fan switch should be set "on" for continuous blower operation or "auto" if you want the blower to function only while the unit is operating.
